Fans of the color green, rejoice! Wicked is certainly the musical for you. From the main character’s skin color to the stage background, a poison green hue runs through the entire show. At the heart of it all, the audience gets to witness a bond forming between the wicked witch of the west Elphaba and the good witch Glinda. Stephen Schwartz’s world-famous Broadway production of Gregory Maguire’s novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” made its first debut in 2003. Fifteen years after bursting onto the Broadway scene, the show is still one of the most popular musicals on Broadway.
The story centers around Elphaba and Glinda, an unlikely pair of roommates at school. Elphaba possesses outstanding magical talent yet finds herself an outcast who is shunned because of her green skin. Glinda, who is relatively talent-free in this regard, looks dazzling and is popular among her fellow students. After initial aversion for one another, a close friendship emerges between the two witches. Together, they uncover some dark activities taking place in Oz, including superficiality, injustice and fabrication all the way to the wizard who runs the country - the highly-propagated picture of their idyllic country and its virtuous residents is turned completely upside down. Behind this fairytale lies a very real message that emphasizes the importance of inner values and taking a stand against discrimination.
The original production of Wicked premiered on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003, after finishing pre-Broadway trials at San Francisco's Curran Theatre in June of 2003. Since then, the success of the Broadway production has led to several other productions worldwide, including shows in various North American cities, a long-running Laurence Olivier Award–nominated West End production, and a series of international performances. Since its 2003 debut, Wicked has broken box-office records around the world. Nevertheless, the original Broadway production has won three Tony Awards and six Drama Desk Awards, while its original cast album received a Grammy Award.

Wicked finally burst onto the stage in collaboration with Universal Stage Production, first in San Francisco and then on Broadway.
