Intro

Fans of the color green, rejoice! Wicked is certainly the musical for you. From the main character’s skin color to the stage background, a poison green hue runs through the entire show. At the heart of it all, the audience gets to witness a bond forming between the wicked witch of the west Elphaba and the good witch Glinda. Stephen Schwartz’s world-famous Broadway production of Gregory Maguire’s novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” made its first debut in 2003. Fifteen years after bursting onto the Broadway scene, the show is still one of the most popular musicals on Broadway.

Synopsis

The story centers around Elphaba and Glinda, an unlikely pair of roommates at school. Elphaba possesses outstanding magical talent yet finds herself an outcast who is shunned because of her green skin. Glinda, who is relatively talent-free in this regard, looks dazzling and is popular among her fellow students. After initial aversion for one another, a close friendship emerges between the two witches. Together, they uncover some dark activities taking place in Oz, including superficiality, injustice and fabrication all the way to the wizard who runs the country - the highly-propagated picture of their idyllic country and its virtuous residents is turned completely upside down. Behind this fairytale lies a very real message that emphasizes the importance of inner values and taking a stand against discrimination.

Innovation

The original production of Wicked premiered on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003, after finishing pre-Broadway trials at San Francisco's Curran Theatre in June of 2003. Since then, the success of the Broadway production has led to several other productions worldwide, including shows in various North American cities, a long-running Laurence Olivier Award–nominated West End production, and a series of international performances. Since its 2003 debut, Wicked has broken box-office records around the world. Nevertheless, the original Broadway production has won three Tony Awards and six Drama Desk Awards, while its original cast album received a Grammy Award.

Cast & Music

Idina Menzel gained international fame in the original lineup of the Broadway production of Wicked. After only one year on Broadway, the musical reached enormous success at the Tony Awards and Idina Menzel was awarded for the Best Actress in a Musical. Since then, her renown has spread past the realm of Broadway and into the Disney universe, where fans got to see her talent when Menzel lent her voice to ice queen Elsa in Frozen for the now-infamous song “Let it Go.” Kristin Chenoweth starred as Glinda and was part of the original cast of Wicked, gaining worldwide recognition alongside castmates Idina Menzel and Joel Grey. Chenoweth has received several awards for her portrayal of the witch Glinda. Kristin Chenoweth has a long history on Broadway and continues to wow the audience in other musicals and also on television.

The musical Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 book “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” A retelling of the 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum's classic 1900 novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Stephen Schwartz, musical writer and three-time Oscar winner, quickly realized the story book would make a picture-perfect musical. When Schwartz tried to pursue the author for the stage rights, he had to overcome some obstacles, convince the author and Universal of the musical’s Broadway potential. Wicked finally burst onto the stage in collaboration with Universal Stage Production, first in San Francisco and then on Broadway.

The musical score of Wicked the Musical holds a wealth of elegance, mirroring the story’s subject matter of good and evil. One of the most distinguished features is its highly chic use of colors in both the instrumental and the vocal writing. Audiences are captivated and immersed in the story line by songs such as “No One Mourns the Wicked”, “Dear Old Shiz,” “Popular” or “The Wizard and I.” The musical is remarkable for its ability to make a direct and powerful impression on anyone.

Reviews

The fanbase is real and the reviews are phenomenal. The audience refers to the work as “The BEST musical EVER!”. Spectators “would recommend seeing Wicked to anyone and everyone.” Fans see the musical as “a captivating story that calls upon your imagination to relive a new understanding of the Wizard of Oz.” An most impressive of all, viewers suggest that “If you can only see one show in New York, you have to be a little Wicked.”
