Based on the eponymous 2007 film starring Keri Russell, Waitress brings the much-loved movie a musical twist on Broadway. Small town waitress and talented pie maker Jenna finds herself stuck in a rut and trying to find a way out of her humdrum life. Unexpected surprises, complicated relationships and the ultimate dream of winning a pie contest unite with energetic music by Grammy Award-nominated Sara Bareilles – step into the pie shop and discover all that Waitress has in store!

Whether she’s waiting tables at Joe’s Diner or at home trying to get through another day with her abrasive husband Earl, Jenna Hunterson always has one thing on her mind: pie. She dreams up and bakes mouthwatering pies that are inspired by the people and scenarios she encounters each day – she’s got everything from “Couch Potato Pie” to “Sweet Victory Pie” and “The Key (Lime) to Happiness Pie.” Despite all her fantastic tarts, Jenna’s really dreaming of the chance to escape wearisome daily life in her small southern town. Jenna’s regulars at the diner, friends and coworkers all give her advice on how to find her own happiness, however her reveries are upturned when she finds out she is unexpectedly pregnant.

Feeling trapped in an unhappy marriage, Jenna confides in handsome Doctor Jim Pomatter during her frequent appointments, whose compassion and unwavering support of her plight quickly complicate things even further as Jenna falls head-over-heels for him. Through a series of songs and the crafting of multiple pies on stage, Jenna tries to stay focused on her dream of winning an upcoming baking contest whose prize is a hefty sum and could mean a fresh start away from the drama of her hometown.

Can Jenna patch things up with her husband for the sake of their child? Will she leave Earl to be with Dr. Pomatter instead? Or will Jenna make a culinary breakthrough in the pie competition and take her life in a new direction altogether? Waitress is a musical tale of solidarity, big dreams, and the potential power of a well-crafted pie!

Spectators can be prepared to be enveloped by the magic of a bakery from the very second they step inside the theater. The entrance of the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in New York has been transformed into a veritable pie shop, with the aromas of freshly-baked confections swirling in the air and decadent slices proffered up by pink apron clad servers. The bakery atmosphere continues into the main hall itself, with the stage’s proscenium arching out into the audience in the shape of a perfectly-sculpted pie crust. The show is supplied weekly with 32 pies crafted by a team of eight elite bakers straight out of Hell’s Kitchen… and there’s even a fresh apple pie baking through every show, so there’s never a shortage of apple-cinnamon goodness wafting through the air!

Music & Cast

With a book by Jessie Nelson, direction under Diane Paulus and a fantastic original score with music and lyrics by five-time Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, Waitress has prided itself on making Broadway history as the first musical with an all-female creative team. In addition to her musical contributions to the show, Sara Bareilles occasionally appears in production herself, starring as Jenna – her third Broadway engagement wrapped up in early February 2019, but if history repeats itself she’s bound to be back on the stage again in the future. The North American tour cast includes Christine Dwyer as Jenna, alongside Steven Good as Dr. Pomatter, Matt DeAngelis as Earl, with Maiesha McQueen and Jessie Shelton as fellow waitresses Becky and Dawn.

Waitress has found much critical acclaim since its 2016 debut – audiences simply can’t get enough! The play has garnered 4 Tony Award nominations, 6 Drama Desk award nominations and 1 win, 2 Drama League Award nominations, 4 Outer Critics Circle Award nominations and 1 win, and a Grammy Award mention for Best Musical Theater Album. Critics, audiences, and The New York Post agree: Waitress is “a treat for all the senses!”
