Who would have thought a musical in which a slew of expletives is directed at God would be that successful? After all, it doesn't take a satirical musical to question the foundations of various religious groups. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone teamed up with Robert Lopez to illustrate the story and self-image of sects by making fun of the situation. There is still room for sarcasm in the world of theater. Everything that seems appalling and somewhat uncomfortable in this musical is actually what makes it so entertaining. If you are ready for a little bit of sarcasm, The Book of Mormon will be right for you! The musical is promised to make you laugh, cry and think and maybe even answer essential questions we all have.
For Mormons, it is common to proselytize in other countries. Kevin Price, a cheerful, confident believer, is sent to Uganda along with Arnold Cunningham. Cunningham is a very insecure guy who likes to twist the truth. The unequal couple set out motivated to recruit new members, but they never expected it’d be this hard. Instead of the idyllic scenes from The Lion King that they had imagined, they encounter poverty, violence, disease and hunger – their mission turns out to be much more difficult than expected. The Africans they encounter have already been educated about God and yet nothing has changed in their lives. Quite frankly, they are rather skeptical of God. It's only when Elder Cunningham, who hasn't read the Mormon Book himself because it's so boring, gets creative that they start to see the light.
The musical by the creator of South Park has become an international success. The show prompts laughter from audiences around the world with all its delightfully wicked humor. When the musical debuted on Broadway in 2011, it was nominated for fourteen Tony Awards. In the same year the musical by Trey Parker and Matt Stone cleared a staggering nine of the coveted trophies such as Best Book of a Musical, Best Musical, Best Original Score Written for the Theatre and to this day continues to be the hottest ticket in town. Stone and Parker thanked their South Park fans in their acceptance speeches because without their support and shared twisted sense of humor, the musical may never have been so successful.
