Broadway classic My Fair Lady brings George Bernard Shaw's satire back on stage to sing and dance. The world premiere of MY FAIR LADY took place in a 1956 New York production by Herman Levin, directed by Moss Hart, and became one of the greatest musical successes of all times. This very amusing musical challenges the audience to examine what makes each of us who we really are. Is it language? Is it origin? Is it nature or nurture? Or just accepting a man with all his good and less good sides? Decide for yourself and experience an evening full of entertainment at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center. Find out if Eliza can survive and conquer the challenge in the aristocratic society of London.
Eliza Doolittle the flower girl becomes the subject of an obscure bet by eccentric phonetics professor Henry Higgins because of her interesting dialect. He wagers with Colonel Pickering that he can turn her around and make a lady out of her in just six months. For Eliza, a tough period of language training begins with Higgins, who hurts her with his arrogance on a day-to-day basis. But when Eliza wants to go her own way, after confidently passing Higgins’ test, the diehard bachelor must admit to himself that he has grown accustomed to her face. What Higgins forgot on the way to success was that Eliza is not an experimental object, but a person with feelings and now without an accent. Will Eliza Doolittle put up with the role of guinea pig? Or does she have different plans for herself?
The original 1956 production won six Tony Awards including Best Musical and was hailed by The New York Times as “one of the best musicals of the century.” Set in London around 1910 and based on Bernard Shaw's satire, the musical debuted on New York's Broadway with Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison. With over 2,700 performances in six and a half years, the musical itself was a sensational success by Broadway standards and made into a film in 1964 starring Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. In 2018 the musical was brought back to Broadway and has been hailed as the Best Musical Revival of 2018.

My Fair Lady based on George Bernard Shaw's comedy satire is now among the most popular musicals ever. But at first, composers such as Leonard Bernstein or Cole Porter failed in the task of editing the ironic social comedy for musical theatres. It was thanks to the talent of Viennese Frederick Loewe, together with the librettist Alan Jay Lerner, that the impossible was achieved in 1956. With 2,700 performances of My Fair Lady, the musical ran longer than any musical play ever before on Broadway. In 2018 the most beloved musical My Fair Lady re-opened on Broadway. This time it is even more spectacular, scenes are composed in a stunning way and the lighting adds a magical luminosity to the show.
New musicals are constantly making their debuts on Broadway, but having an old musical revived again is certainly not as common. Based on its great success in 1956, the expectations for the revival were huge. My Fair Lady not only met but even exceed everyone’s expectations. Audiences adore the musical and the media has also fallen in love. Zesty, humorous and snappy, thrilling, glorious and transformative are just a few of the words used by the audience to describe the musical.
