The premiere of James Graham's drama Ink opened at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on April 24, 2019. The play takes place in London in 1969 when young Rupert Murdoch purchases a struggling magazine called “The Sun.” His goal: to turn this newspaper around and make it a smashing success and a must-read, ultimately horrifying and destroying the competition. Larry Lamb the new editor recruits a questionable team of underdogs who are eager for triumph. Together they will prove their talents and go to any lengths for success - the race for the most ink is on!

The play is set in 1969 in London following Rupert Murdoch on his scrupulous mission to dominate the British media with his newspaper called “The Sun.” His goal is to make the publication appeal the everyday person. Rupert wants his newspaper to speak to the masses and not the predefined high society. Larry Lamb, the editor of the newspaper takes the stage as a dubious, rather malicious character. The audience can see very quickly how far Lamb and his team of reporters will go to get the perfect story. Nothing will stop them - especially not the competition. Ink presages the age of populist media in which we now live and squirm. Stop the press & buy your tickets today, before the ink runs dry.

The cast includes Olivier Award winners Bertie Carvel (Matilda) and Jonny Lee Miller ("Elementary," Frankenstein), David Wilson Barnes (The Lieutenant of Inishmore), Bill Buell (The History Boys), Andrew Durand (Head Over Heels), Eden Marryshow (Broadway debut), Colin McPhillamy (The Ferryman), Erin Neufer (Broadway debut), Kevin Pariseau (Legally Blonde), Rana Roy (Broadway debut), Michael Siberry (Junk), Robert Stanton (Saint Joan), and Tara Summers (The Hard Problem).

“Broadway’s latest play INK is a scrappy, seductive tabloid tale,” nominated for 6 Tony Awards including Best Play and 5 Outer Critics Circle Awards. Already an audience favorite, Ink has been hailed by Variety as a “Broadway masterpiece.” The New York Times on the other hand compares Murdoch to Mephistopheles, an agent of Lucifer in a legend by Faust in stating “As for the Mephistopheles who sets this process into motion, he is still very much alive and reigning over a robust empire that probably reaches into your own home. His name is Rupert Murdoch.” Strikingly, ’sexy’ is not a word commonly used to describe the founding of most newspapers. More accurate descriptors might include: “formal,” “dusty” and “self-important.” This newspaper, however, is quite different.
