Intro

Step into the theater and be transported back in time with Hamilton! Broadway’s hottest show, Hamilton: An American Musical breathes new life into the story of 18th-century Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. His perhaps often overlooked rags-to-riches tale is told in such an innovative way that audiences young and old can’t get their hands on tickets fast enough. Set against the backdrop of the American Revolution, Hamilton’s catchy hip-hop and R&B tunes will bring you on a fast-paced historical journey about the statesman most people only recognize as the face of the ten-dollar bill – an adventure you’re certainly not soon to forget.

The brainchild of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton was inspired by the eponymous biographical novel written by Ron Chernow in 2004. The multi-talented Miranda has worn many hats during Hamilton’s evolution, serving not only as the show’s playwright and chief songwriter, but also playing the titular role in the show’s opening run in New York City, which began off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2015. After a four-month run, it was clear that Hamilton was destined for a bigger and brighter scene, and the show triumphantly made its Broadway debut in July 2015 in its current home at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Even though show-stopper Lin-Manuel Miranda is no longer a part of the cast, the show has gained such renown and garnered so much popularity that it consistently plays to sold-out audiences. Synopsis

So, what is the Hamilton story all about, anyway? To put it simply, the show is a tale of hard work, politics, and a fateful duel. While certain liberties are taken – take, for example, the deliberate casting of actors of color in the roles of traditionally white American Founding Fathers – fans of history can rejoice in the highbrow representation of our nation’s historical heritage through the musical’s witty lyrics and carefully-crafted timeline.

Through song and rap, the cast of Hamilton tells the tale of the orphaned Alexander Hamilton’s journey from his childhood in the Caribbean islands to his arrival in New York in 1776. Hamilton’s encounters with fellow revolutionaries including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison all shape his rise to political power. Duels, affairs, scandals: this show has it all! And let’s not forget Hamilton’s fateful showdown with Aaron Burr. Even the non-history buffs in the crowd are sure to be thoroughly entertained during this exhilarating spectacle.

Innovation

Diversity in casting was one of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s central tenets when conjuring up the story of Hamilton for a modern audience. Miranda sought to reimagine the culture and history of the Founding Fathers to reflect a more contemporary American demographic. Modern political issues are highlighted throughout the show, with the theme of immigration often taking center-stage. Hamilton himself was an immigrant to America from the tropical island of Nevis, and through hard work and tireless dedication, he made a name for himself as an influential statesman and steadfast Founding Father. Miranda’s diverse cast and musical styles draw from a vast range of cultures, reflecting the melting pot which America has evolved into over the centuries.

Music & Cast

Many fans of Hamilton have still yet to see the show on stage but have instead been hooked by the musical album recorded by the original cast. Released in 2015, the album climbed all the way to the number one spot on the Billboard rap charts and even garnered a Grammy Award for the Best Musical Theater Album. Since its release, other compilations of Hamilton’s music have been released, including The Hamilton Mixtape, The Hamilton Instrumentals, Hamiltunes and Hamildrops.

Though Lin-Manuel Miranda is no longer taking center stage for the Broadway production, the phenomenal Michael Luwoye stars as Alexander Hamilton, alongside Daniel Breaker portraying Aaron Burr, James Monroe Iglehart embodying Thomas Jefferson, Carvens Lissaint playing George Washington, and Denée Benton as Eliza Hamilton.
